Gay men and mental health

24 August 2010

'There are far higher rates of depression, anxiety and suicide than among straight men; far higher rates of self-destructive behaviour; substance abuse and sex addiction; and high levels of issues around intimacy and forming relationships," says Matthew Todd, editor of Attitude magazine, interviewed in The Guardian.

He talks about the 'taboo' subject of the high rates of  mental health problems experienced by gay men, the main theme of this month's magazine, and which, Todd says, is a 'big taboo'

The Guardian article suggests that although atttitudes may be changing, the damage inflicted by homophobia and growing up "different" has already been done for many gay men, and that mainstream health services need to get to grips with this issue.
